WHAT IS SLT ?
SLT, or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty uses a gentle laser that is applied to the area of fluid drainage from the eye. It helps to increase the flow of fluid from the eye and decreases pressure in the eye.
The procedure is performed in the office and the eye is numbed with a drop. A special combination mirror-contact lens is placed on the eye and about 50 applications are made. The treatment takes about a minute. About 20 minutes afterwards your eye pressure is checked and again in 2 – 3 weeks. There is no pain, but occasionally there might be mild discomfort.
Complications are unusual, but may include a temporary pressure rise, a tiny hemorrhage or faintness.
The benefits are better pressure control of glaucoma and reduction of some or all glaucoma eye drops. Unlike the old “ Argon Laser “ if the effect decreases with time, the SLT treatment can be repeated numerous times.
Here at the Cataract Care Center, we are very happy to be able to offer our Patients the new SLT treatment for glaucoma.
